Data Binding – From Excel to Blend

  1. Create an XML format document with structure of your data. Create two elements. Use something like:
  2. <?xml version=”1.0″ encoding=”UTF-8″ standalone=”yes”?>
    <Seasons>
           <Item>
                 <Fall>content</Fall>
                 <Spring>content</Spring>
                 <Summer>content</Summer>
                 <Winter>content</Winter>
          </Item>
          <Item>
                 <Fall>content</Fall>
                 <Spring>content</Spring>
                 <Summer>content</Summer>
                 <Winter>content</Winter>
          </Item>
    </Seasons>
  3. Open XML Spy and validate the syntax, then generate a schema
  4. Open your excel data file, go to the Developer tab (you might need to expose this under options), click “Source” and from the “XML Maps” button browse to XML page. Drag column headers over from Map box to column header in Excle, you will see the data populate.
  5. Save as “XML Data”
  6. In Expression Blend, go to Data tab and “Import from XML”
  7. Drag item collection to the grid to which you would like to bind.

That’s it!

Silverlight datagrid – creating checkboxes and hyperlinks in column

It took me awhile to figure out that there are three types of DataGridColumns, I could not expose the celltemplate because I was referencing the  DataGridTextColumn instead of the DataGridTemplateColumn. So here is the DataGrid with a checkbox, textcolumn and template. To hyperlink locally, I think you need a target name and Frame in the target page.

<sdk:DataGrid DataContext=”{Binding}” ColumnHeaderStyle=”{StaticResource ColumnHeaderStyle}” AutoGenerateColumns=”False”  ItemsSource=”{Binding ItemCollection, Source={StaticResource CustomData}}” >
    <sdk:DataGrid.Columns>
        <sdk:DataGridCheckBoxColumn Binding=”{Binding DataOne}” Width=”40″/>
        <sdk:DataGridTemplateColumn Header=”Description” Width=”400″>
        <sdk:DataGridTemplateColumn.CellTemplate>
                 <DataTemplate>
                      <HyperlinkButton Content=”{Binding DataTwo}” NavigateUri=”http://website.com” >
                 </DataTemplate>
        </sdk:DataGridTemplateColumn.CellTemplate>
    </sdk:DataGridTemplateColumn>
   <sdk:DataGridTextColumn Binding=”{Binding DataThree}” Header=”Coupon”/>
   <sdk:DataGridTextColumn Binding=”{Binding DataFour}” Header=”Product”/>
  <sdk:DataGridTextColumn Binding=”{Binding DataFive}” Header=”Service”/>    </sdk:DataGrid.Columns>
</sdk:DataGrid>

The type ‘dxg:GridColumnHeaderThemeKey’ was not found. Verify that you are not missing an assembly reference and that all referenced assemblies have been built.

Add this to your window/usercontrol:

xmlns:dxgt=”http://schemas.devexpress.com/winfx/2008/xaml/grid/themekeys

Mageui – No entry point specified on application manifest validation

For several days I was trying to use mageui, after populating the files and selecting the application.exe as the entry point, I would click Save and the entry point selection would default back to no selection. The problem was that I was using an older version of mageui- there are several on my machine with VS and SDKs- so be sure to use the latest version of mageui.exe with your project.

MageUI - the Entry Point selection disappears on 'save'

WPF Bug: Fatal Exception 0x80131623

My project suddenly became unblendable, however I could open the solution in Visual Studio and build. Adding the dll to VS or Blend caused the fatal error, so there was something wrong with the build. I went through all of my recent files and made sure all of the markup was well formed, none of the build settings had changed. I copied the project file from a backup and replaced it and the problem was fixed.

    <Hyperlink NavigateUri=”Page.xaml”><Run Text=”Item Name”/></Hyperlink>
